New Roles, New Postings

Ok, so it has been a while since the last post and I do know that I am not updating my blog as much as I used to. I guess some of the delays in blogging can be attributed to being lazy (try doing a 10 hour day on a train and then coming home to post) and some comes from just not much new going on. This time though, I do have some news to add.

That last two days I have been busy training for a new role in Main Street Operations. I am now what is called a Relief Coordinator here at Disney World (Lead at Disneyland). Relief meaning that I fill in when a status coordinator is not available. As a coordinator, you are responsible for ensuring that the area runs smoothly and effectively. My training this week was on Turnstiles learning how to reprint demagnetized tickets and running CDS, Cast Deployment System. CDS for those non-Disney people is what we use to deploy cast members. You sign in and it tells you who to break or what position to pick up. It really is a nice tool. I still have two more days on training for Turnstile Coordinator before I can move on to getting trained in vehicles and Engineer so I can become Main Street Coordinator.

I also have my interview this week for Trainer in Main Street which will allow me to help train new cast members to the area. I am really looking forward to this as I do miss teaching my Lifeguard classes. Both Coordinator and Trainer make me excited to know that all my hard work in the area is paying off. In a recent one-on-one with my area manager, I was told that I have 100% support in the area from the management team and that they would support me in anyway possible. I’m pretty excited about that.

Now, with those new roles, I am still in the process of prepping my resume and practice interview questions for the Guest Relations posting coming up in a few weeks. I have been told that I will get an interview but, I am not taking that for granted. I plan on working my hardest to get in this time just as I did that last time.

Well folks, that is what has been going on with me the last few weeks. I’ll keep everyone posted on my Guest Relations quest in the upcoming weeks.

iPods Everywhere

So I recently joined the gym over at TEAM Dinsey so that I can get back in to shape. It’s not a bad deal and the hours/distance from home are just right. Yet after going the last couple of days, I have noticed something intersting. I have seen all different styles of iPods on people working out. I think out of about 20 people, I have only noticed 2 or 3 that do not have one of these little music devices. From the iPod Shuffle to the iPod Video, I have seen the entire gamet. I just find it intersting that the iPod really is everywhere and it seems that everyone has one. How many of you have an iPod? Feel free to post a comment.

I’ve Been Working on the Railroad…

It seems that I have been on the trains ever since I came over to Main Street. I really do enjoy working on the trains and have been excited to be a part of Walt Disney’s tradition. One of the coolest things about working trains is that you become part of a select group of cast members that get to control a genuine steam engine. I am currently waiting for my training to move up in to the cab to drive the train but in the mean time, I have been busy shadowing the engineers on my breaks and after work in the cab. It’s such a thrill being up there. I’ve been able to practice driving a little bit, doing to firing and of course, doing the whistle! Talk about a thrill. I feel like a little kid all over again and most of the engineers act the same way.

Aside from waiting ot move up to the cab, the only new thing going on for me at work is that I have been able to get some practice training and will soon become a trainer it looks like for new cast members. My first trainee was one of the new Guest Service Managers for our area. It was sort of a surprise thing that I would be training a new conductor as I am not a trainer yet but both of her trainers had called in. It was a blast Chrissi and I can’t wait to work with you more. Thanks again!

Hail to the Chief

Today was an interesting trip home after work. First, I ended up getting extended by 20 minutes so I could take the train around again. There was a scheduling goof so there was a gap in coverage, oh well, over time for me 🙂 I finally get clocked out after my long day and head to the tunnel to change. I get changed and get my new costumes from my locker and head for the bus to WestClock.

For those that were not aware, President Bush was speaking at the Contemporary Resort tonight for a fundraiser and all roads in and out of the Magic Kingdom were restricted access. Now, I am supposed to meet my friend Amber over at Downtown Disney for dinner and I’m thinking well, it’s early enough and I can head Floridian Way (towards Grand Floridian behind Splash Mountain) instead of the usual way. I approach the intersection and the security guard directs me over towards the Contemporary to go. So I listen and turn only to be stopped by Space Mountain by the Secret Service and the Police only to be told to turn around. Fine with me, I don’t mind going the other way.

Finally get going on Floridian Way and am on my way over World Drive towards Epcot when low and behold, the Presidential Motorcade comes passing right by me. Lot’s of motorcycle cops and the limo. Just cool to see really. Only them on the road with no one else around. I feel bad for those guests that are either at the Contemporary or the Magic Kingdom car park as none of them were able to access the roads or their cars till after the President left.

Where Am I?

Ok, I know I live in Florida and it can get rather hot in the summer but I am beginning to wonder where I live now since it is only 42ºF out side right now and has been in the 40’s all day. I’ve had my P-Coat, Suit Coat, Dress Waist Coat, a Dress Shirt, and an undershirt on all day and I was still freezing my rear off. Now I know I can’t complain since those of you in the North East are getting walloped with snow right now but this is Florida not the North! Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder. Time to break out the turtleneck and hand-warmers.

A Day of Fun

Today was a nice fun day off. I met up with Roz and Cody this morning at Animal Kingdom to got looking for some of the new Cast Lanyard Pins. Came out with a few of the ones that I was looking for. For those that don’t know, I collect Figment and Peter Pan pins and the new Lanyard Pins have several Figment ones in them. While I was at Animal Kingdom, I was finally able to get the t-shirt I had been trying to track down. I had been looking for this particular shirt for several weeks. It’s just your simple brown t-shirt with red on the collar and sleeves with the Animal Kingdom Logo on the front in red felt. Looks great.

After DAK, we went over to look for more pins at the Disney-MGM Studios. Nothing major today but just a fun day with friends and walking around the parks. Oh, I almost forgot. While we were at Downtown Disney, I learned that Guest Relations will be posting again next month. I can’t wait. I’m going to try my best to do what it takes in the interview to get accepted this time.

BlackBerry Humor

So for those that don’t know it, I am addicted to my BlackBerry (READ: CrackBerry). What some of you may also not be aware of is that there is a possibility due to a pending lawsuit that the BlackBerry Service in the United States will be shutdown. The below cartoon is from The Onion but I thought it was worth sharing.

Tour Guide Tom

Hello once again to all my readers. I have been busy with family in town for the last couple of weeks. First, my brother Tim came to visit for a couple of days and then less then a week later, my Dad came to visit. So I have been busy over the last couple weeks playing host and tour guide. Tim’s visit was nice since I hadn’t seen him since last May. He is just starting off at a new school and seems quite excited. Dad had been down in December so it was a nice relaxing mini vacation for both him and myself. One of the highlights for me was being able to get dad on Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom thanks to my friend George from work. Always nice to have friends and family come and visit. Next on the docket is my friend from the college program, Brandon, in April. Coming down to Orlando or WDW soon? Let me know.
